Before joining Boston Scientific, Jim was President and Chief Executive Officer of Biogen, Inc. He managed Biogen’s research and development, manufacturing, marketing and sales. He joined Biogen as President and Chief Operating Officer in 1994 and became President and CEO in 1997. He also served on Biogen’s Board of Directors.
Previously, Jim spent 22 years with Baxter International, rising from financial analyst to President and Chief Operating Officer. Between 1972 and 1994, he served as Managing Director in Japan (1975-1977) and Spain (1977-1980), and President of the I.V. Systems Group (1981-1986). He was promoted to Executive Vice President, responsible for running a worldwide business group, in 1988 and became responsible for Baxter’s manufacturing and distribution business in 1990. He served as President and Chief Operating Officer of the 60,000-employee, $9 billion company from 1992 until 1994.
Jim serves on the boards of Boston Scientific Corporation, and Applera Corporation, Curis, Inc., and is involved with the BioMedical Science Career Program. He also served as lieutenant in the U. S. Navy from 1968 to 1972.
He holds an A.B. from Harvard College and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
Dr. Baim's primary responsibilities include management of Clinical Affairs (including pre-clinical and clinical studies); Medical Affairs (including educational programs and physician relationships), and Safety. He also plays a major role in developing technology strategies, including the assessment of technologies of acquisition and partnership candidates, and their integration with internal technologies to help develop the Company's future product portfolio.
Before joining Boston Scientific, Dr. Baim was a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Senior Physician at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, and an internationally recognized leader in interventional cardiology who specialized in the development and evaluation of new interventional cardiovascular devices. He has published nearly 300 scientific papers on interventional cardiology, edited the leading textbook in the field (Grossman's Cardiac Catheterization, Angiography and Intervention, now in its 7th edition), and has served as a member of the Interventional Cardiology Test Committee of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). Dr. Baim has been the national Principal Investigator on literally dozens of clinical trials in interventional cardiology, and a founder or key consultant for more than 20 start-up companies and medical device incubators in areas ranging from embolic protection, thrombectomy, chronic total occlusions, arterial closure, novel stent and coatings, heart failure, and percutaneous heart valves. He was the recipient of the Career Achievement Award at TCT 2000, based on his clinical, research, and educational contributions to the field.
Dr. Baim completed his undergraduate training in Physics at the University of Chicago, and then received a M.D. from Yale University School of Medicine. During post-graduate training in medicine and cardiology at Stanford, he worked with Dr. John Simpson during the development of some of the earliest moveable guidewire coronary angioplasty catheters. In 1981, Dr. Baim was recruited to establish an Interventional Cardiology program at Boston's Beth Israel Hospital. Under his leadership, this program went on to perform seminal research in the refinement, critical evaluation and optimal application of newer devices, including stents, atherectomy, clot removal and distal embolic protection.
In 2000, he was recruited by the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, where in addition to his clinical responsibilities, he directed the hospital's participation in the Center for the Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology (CIMIT), a federally funded inter-disciplinary consortium of leading Boston teaching hospitals and engineering institutions that develops innovative device solutions for a wide range of unmet medical challenges. Since 2005, Dr. Baim has also served as Chief Academic Officer of the Harvard Clinical Research Institute (HCRI), a not-for-profit organization that designs, conducts, and analyzes pilot and pivotal trials of new medical devices to support their approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
In this role, he is responsible for worldwide operations, distribution, design and clinical quality assurance for all Boston Scientific businesses and acquisition partnerships. He will also act as company liaison to all compliance bodies, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, European Union Competent Authorities and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Japan.
Brian joined the Company in 2000 as Quality Director based in the Company's Spencer, Indiana facility, and most recently was Senior Vice President, Global Quality. In this role, he instituted a corporate quality system for all operational areas resulting in complaint reductions of 20 percent year-over-year. Brian also upgraded the Company's quality systems to support evolving business needs such as combination products, and improve complaint handling, operational metrics, supplier quality, clinical quality, and global quality systems training.
Previously, Brian was General Manager at Allegiance Healthcare, a manufacturer of instant hot and cold packs. He began his career at Baxter Healthcare Corporation, a medical company that develops medical treatments for hemophilia, immune disorders, kidney disease, cancer, trauma and other conditions.
Brian earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering with a Minor in Mathematics and Chemistry at the University of Arkansas.
Before joining the Company, Fred worked for several medical device companies, including Guidant, where he launched the Delta T DDD Pacemaker platform, and St. Jude Medical, where he served as Managing Director for the European subsidiary of the Cardiac Rhythm Management Division and as Executive Vice President, responsible for worldwide Research & Development for implantable pacemaker systems.
Fred was educated in The Netherlands and Germany and holds the U.S. equivalent of a master's degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on medical technology from the Technical University in Aachen, Germany. He was the Vice President of the International Association of Prosthesis Manufacturers (IAPM) in Brussels from 1995 to 1997.
Paul brings more than 25 years of communications experience to Boston Scientific. Before joining the Company in 2000, he was Executive Director of External Affairs at Georgetown University Medical Center. Previously he was Chief of Staff at the U.S. Department of Commerce. He served for 10 years on the staff of Senator Edward M. Kennedy, first as Press Secretary and later as Chief of Staff. Prior to that he served as a press aide to Senator John F. Kerry.
He holds a B.A. from Dartmouth College. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Medical Device Industry Council and the Massachusetts High Tech Council, and he is an Overseer of Children’s Hospital in Boston.
In this role, Jim oversees the Company's Business Development, Marketing Science, E-Marketing, and Health Economics and Reimbursement functions. He also has responsibility for directing and supporting the corporate strategy process. Prior to this role, Jim served as Group President of the Cardiovascular Group, which included the Company's Peripheral Interventions, Vascular Surgery, Neurovascular, Electrophysiology, and Cardiac Surgery businesses.
Previously, Jim spent 23 years at Bain & Company, where he served as Director and Partner, based in Boston, Massachusetts and Munich, Germany. From 1990 to 2003 he was the Global Healthcare Practice Managing Partner working on strategic, operational and organizational projects with medical technology, diagnostic, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, analytic instrumentation, information technology, distribution and alternate site and hospital provider clients. He was also an elected member and chairman of all three of Bain's partner leadership committees, including the Partner Compensation and Promotion Committee, Partner Management Committee and Partner Nominating and Governance Committee.
Jim graduated from Cornell University School of Engineering where he earned a B.S. in industrial engineering and operations research with high distinction. He earned an M.B.A. with distinction from Harvard Business School.
Hank joined the Company in 1995 as a result of the merger between Boston Scientific and SCIMED Life Systems, Inc. and most recently was Senior Vice President of Marketing for Boston Scientific. In this role, he was responsible for the global marketing functions of the Company’s Cardiovascular group and all Corporate Marketing functions. He oversaw the commercialization strategy for the Company’s TAXUS® paclitaxel-eluting coronary stent system, defined and developed the Boston Scientific Medical Affairs organization and initiated best-in-class Marketing Science and e-Marketing programs. Prior to that, Hank was Vice President, Corporate Marketing and Vice President, Strategic Marketing for the Company.
Prior to joining Boston Scientific, Hank held a variety of management positions in sales and marketing for SCIMED Life Systems, Inc., Charter Medical Corporation, and Control Data Corporation. He began his career at the United States Air Force Academy Hospital and later was Healthcare Planner, Office of the Surgeon General, for the United States Air Force Medical Service.
Hank has served on several industry boards including the board of directors of the Global Health Exchange, the Committee on Payment and Policy, and AdvaMed. He has also served on the Board of Advisors to MillenniumDoctor.com and the Board of Advisors to the College of Business, Center for Services Marketing and Management, Arizona State University.
Hank earned a B.S. and a M.B.A. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
Previously, Sam served as the Executive Vice President, Finance and Corporate Services and Chief Financial Officer at Zimmer Holdings, Inc., a position to which he was appointed in December 2005. From October 2003 to December 2005, he served as Executive Vice President, Corporate Finance and Operations, and Chief Financial Officer of Zimmer. From July 2001 to October 2003, Sam served as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Zimmer. Prior to joining Zimmer, Sam served as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Arrow Electronics, Inc. from March 1999 until he joined Zimmer. Between 1971 and March 1999, he held various chief financial officer and other financial positions with several U.S. based companies. He previously served as a U.S. Naval Officer.
Sam earned a B.S. in Accounting from Northern Illinois University and an M.B.A. from Roosevelt University.
Prior to his current assignment, Bill was Senior Vice President, Administration, CRM at Boston Scientific Corporation and Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Guidant Corporation.
Previously, Bill was Managing Partner - Business Consulting in the Indianapolis office of Arthur Andersen LLP. He joined Arthur Andersen in 1971 as a staff member involved in consulting with clients in the planning, design and implementation of information systems. Bill was promoted to manager in 1975 and then was admitted as a Partner in Arthur Andersen in 1981. He became the Managing Partner - Andersen Consulting in Indianapolis in 1983 and ran the Indiana practice for the firm for the next six years. In 1989, he left Andersen to join Resort Condominiums International (RCI) as Chief Financial Officer. He spent a year as CFO, was promoted to Chief Operating Officer in 1990 and spent the next six years running North American operations for RCI. He became Information Officer/Worldwide for RCI in 1996. He left RCI in 1997 when it was acquired by HFS and rejoined Arthur Andersen in 1997.
Bill serves as a board member of the Global Healthcare Exchange, Vesalius Ventures, and Board of Governors of the National American Red Cross. He is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Trustee Leadership Development and Honorary Trustee of the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. He is also a board member of the Information Technology Committee of Community Hospitals of Indianapolis, Inc., the Indiana University Information Technology Advancement Council, and ex officio member of the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis.
Bill received a B.S. degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He majored in Systems Analysis and he is also a Certified Public Accountant.
Prior to this role, David was Regional President of Asia-Pacific & Japan operations. He joined the Company in 1995 to oversee the development of the Company's Canadian business and most recently was President of the Company's Japan operations. Prior to this, David was Vice President of Sales, Inter-Continental. In this role, he was responsible for overall sales execution for the businesses, which included training and developing more than 400 sales representatives and 85 sales managers in 35 countries. He also implemented a new "on-boarding" program for new hires, developed a clinical training program, and created a high-performance sales management program for the Inter-Continental business. Previously, he was Vice President and General Manager of the Company's operations in Latin America, Canada and South Africa where he increased revenue nearly 50 percent. Prior to this, David was General Manager, Canada and South Africa, Country Manager of Canada and National Sales Manager, Canada for the Company.
Prior to Boston Scientific, David held sales, marketing and general management positions at a variety of medical-related companies including Stryker Corporation, EBI Medical Systems, Baxter Corporation, and Abbott Labs.
David earned a B.A. in History and Geography from Simon Fraser University and took graduate courses at Simon Fraser University Graduate School.
Steve joined Boston Scientific in 1989 as Vice President and General Manager for the Cardiac Assist business. In 1991, he was appointed Vice President and General Manager for the newly formed Endoscopy business. In 1994, Steve was given the additional responsibility for the company‘s Urology and Gynecology business and was promoted to Group Vice President.
By 1997, the Endoscopy business had grown from $19 million to over $300 million, recording six years of double-digit global growth. In recognition of his accomplishments and to enable Steve to focus full time on the growing Endoscopy business, Steve was promoted to President, Endoscopy. In 1999, Steve was named President of the Boston Scientific‘s Vascular business, which included Peripheral Interventions, Vascular Surgery, and Oncology. In 2000 and 2001, he helped successfully transfer the Peripheral Interventions and the Vascular Surgery businesses to the Cardiovascular Group. In 2000, Steve recommended the establishment of a new business group, Endosurgery, to provide focus on the significant growth opportunities in emerging Quality of Life technologies and in Women‘s Health. In late 2000, Steve was promoted to the Boston Scientific Executive Committee and was named Senior Vice President and Group President for Endosurgery.
Prior to his joining Boston Scientific, Steve enjoyed a 13-year career in Medical Devices including 9 years with Johnson and Johnson, where he held a variety of sales and marketing positions. From 1985 to his joining Boston Scientific, Steve was Vice President of Sales and Marketing for DermaCare, a small medical device firm that supplied finished goods and components to a variety of multi-national medical device firms including Zimmer and Baxter.
He holds a B.S. in Marketing from Pennsylvania State University.
Michael joined the Company in 2004 with the Boston Scientific acquisition of Advanced Bionics as the Vice President of Sales and Clinical Services in the Company’s Auditory business. Most recently he was Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the Boston Scientific’s Pain Management business. In this role, he lead the commercial launch of the Precision™ Spinal Cord Stimulator for intractable pain, and helped launch the spinal cord stimulation business at Boston Scientific. During his tenure, Michael led the field sales and clinical organization, marketing and communications function, field clinical engineering team, technical support team, and training and education department.
Previously, Michael held a variety of management positions at Medtronic in spinal reconstructive surgery and stereotactic image guided surgery. Prior to Medtronic, he worked for Pfizer Inc., where he held a variety of sales and marketing assignments.
Michael earned a B.A. in Business Administration Psychology from Washington and Jefferson College.
In this role, he is responsible for manufacturing plants in the United States and Ireland.
Ken joined Boston Scientific in 1989 holding various positions in the Company’s Cardiovascular Group, including Manufacturing Engineer, Process Development Engineer, Operations Manager, Production Manager and Director of Operations, and Vice President of Operations for our Maple Grove, Minnesota facility. He is also a member of the Company’s Cardiovascular Council, Operating Committee and Executive Committee.
Ken holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on Biomedical Engineering from the University of Minnesota.
Previously, Lucia was Senior Vice President at Quest Diagnostics Incorporated, a provider of diagnostic testing, information and services. She joined Quest in 2001 as a member of the senior management team and was responsible for a portfolio of businesses with approximately $1 billion in revenue, and for directing investments, acquisitions, product development and key customer contracts.
Prior to joining Quest, Lucia was Vice President, Corporate Strategic Marketing for Honeywell International, where she oversaw Honeywell’s business portfolio analysis and strategic marketing groups. Previously, Lucia held a variety of leadership positions in global technology companies Westinghouse, Digital Equipment, Compaq and AlliedSignal.
Lucia graduated from Simmons College where she earned a B.A. in Management. She currently chairs the Board of Trustees at Simmons College and is an overseer of the Museum of Science in Boston. Lucia is also a member of The Committee of 200, an organization of leading businesswomen.
